Under Wisconsin State Statue 95.21, Oneida County Health Department is responsible for “Animal Bite Follow-Up” and the “Rabies Control Program” in Oneida County.
Rabies is a preventable disease often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. Rabies is considered 100% fatal if contracted by a person or animal. Rabies is often transmit to people through wild animals, such as: raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes, but can also be transmit through domestic animals such as cats and dogs. It is for these reasons that all known animal bites in Oneida County are routinely followed up on to ensure the safety of the bite victim and all appropriate tests, treatments, and quarantines are completed as recommended by Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
If you have been bitten by an animal, seek medical attention or first aid immediately. To report a domestic animal bite contact the Sheriff’s Department at 715-361-5100. To report a wild animal or stray animal bite or have any other questions regarding rabies, contact the Health Department at 715-369-6111.
